About the Johns Hopkins Research Project

The Johns Hopkins Research Project (JHP) in Blantyre, Malawi, is a long-standing collaboration between the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Malawi Ministry of Health, and the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). Established in 1988, JHP has spent more than three decades conducting world-class research that has contributed significantly to the understanding, prevention, and treatment of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases in Malawi and globally.

Today, JHP operates research clinics and advanced laboratory facilities that support studies on HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, COVID-19, maternal and child health, and other public health priorities. The institution employs more than 100 professionals, including researchers, clinicians, nurses, laboratory scientists, and support staff dedicated to improving health outcomes through research, training, and community engagement.

One of JHP’s most notable achievements is its internationally accredited laboratory, which plays a critical role in generating high-quality scientific data that informs healthcare policies and interventions both within Malawi and around the world.
