A New Dawn for Renewable Energy in Botswana: Delivering One of the First PPA Solar Projects – University of Botswana/Ub Renewable Energy Hub 5.7 Solar System

By: Katlego Seleofeng Ntshiwa, Senior Renewable Engineer – Sustainable Energy Botswana.

In the journey toward a sustainable energy future, every milestone matters. For Botswana, a new chapter has just begun. In only two months, our team at Ub Renewable Energy Hub has successfully delivered one of the country’s first-ever Private…. (PPP) solar project, a 1MW rooftop solar system at the University of Botswana. A pioneering achievement that sets the tone for what is possible in the renewable energy space.

This project is just the beginning. Over three phases; Phase 1 involves the installation of a 1 MW rooftop solar system on various campus buildings, including the School of Engineering. Phase 2 will add 4.7 MW through a single-axis tracker ground mounted solar system. Phase 3 Battery Storage System.  The University of Botswana solar initiative will deliver a total capacity of 5.7 MW, making it the first and largest commercial-industrial solar initiative in Botswana to date. Once fully operational, it will significantly reduce reliance on the national grid, cut carbon emissions, and provide a practical demonstration of large-scale renewable adoption in Botswana.

This landmark project is the result of a strong partnership between African Sun Energy, the University of Botswana, and B&H Electrical. Together, they are demonstrating that with collaboration, innovation, and commitment, Botswana can accelerate its clean energy transition and unlock sustainable opportunities for generations to come.

This project is not only a technical accomplishment; it is a symbol of progress, innovation, and determination. At its heart lies a vision: to prove that renewable energy solutions in Botswana can be delivered faster, smarter, and more sustainably than ever before.

Breaking New Ground

Developing energy projects in Botswana has often been seen as a long and complex process. Yet, this project challenges that perception. From design to commissioning, everything was completed within just two months, a timeline that is almost unheard of in the region. It demonstrates what can be achieved when collaboration, commitment, and technical expertise come together with a clear purpose. The speed of delivery is more than just a statistic; it is a powerful message to stakeholders across the energy sector:

Renewable energy is not only the future. It is a present reality, and it can be achieved quickly.

Why this PPP Matters

This project is among the first few PPP-driven solar systems in Botswana, marking a significant step forward in how clean energy is deployed.

Under a PPP, the customer does not have to carry the heavy upfront investment. Instead, energy is generated, supplied, and billed as it is consumed. This model makes renewable energy more accessible, affordable, and scalable. Breaking down barriers for institutions, businesses, and communities. By championing this approach, our team is pioneering a framework that could transform how energy is produced and consumed in Botswana for decades to come.

More Than Just Solar

This installation is more than panels, inverters, and cables. It represents a shift in mindset, one where Botswana can lead in clean energy innovation. It shows that renewable power is not just about reducing emissions or lowering costs (though it does both); it is also about creating a legacy of sustainable progress.

For us, this project stands as a beacon of what is possible:

  • Speed without compromise – delivering a high-quality system in record time.
  • Innovation with impact – introducing one of the nation’s first PPA agreements.
  • Inspiration for the future – proving that renewable energy can be deployed effectively, setting the stage for larger-scale adoption.

Looking Ahead

As the system begins to generate clean, reliable power, it marks the start of something greater. Each kilowatt-hour produced is a step toward a greener, more resilient energy future for Botswana. At Ub Renewable Energy Hub, we are proud to have delivered this milestone, but even prouder to know that it is just the beginning. We believe this project is the spark that will ignite many more partnerships, projects, and innovations in the years to come.

“In two months, we didn’t just build a PV system. We helped shape the future of Botswana’s energy story.”
